After escaping from an island prison where he spent 14 years after being wrongly accused of treason, Edmond Dantes returns as the Count of Monte Cristo to seek revenge on the men who betrayed him. When Albert watches Heidi sing and play the guitar, it is noticeable that she doesn’t even touch the strings half the time.

It is always difficult to approach something as complex as this novel and try to create a coherent film that contains all the plot lines, subplots and subplots, not to mention the correct characters. I liked the Richard Chamberlain TV movie and the 2002 film, despite some major plot cuts in both.
Even the 6 hour 23 minute long 1998 mini series
I couldn’t tell the whole story and it’s been my definitive adaptation for 25 years. The point was that it was clear that some plot threads had to be removed, characters changed and the narrative tightened up to fit in three hours.
If you’re a purist who hates The Lord of the Rings because Peter Jackson changed characters and aspects from a 100% faithful adaptation of the book, then of course you won’t like this either
Then it’s a question of whether it’s done in a way that those who don’t already know the story, those who have read the book maybe three or four times and everyone in between can enjoy it. It’s clear that the producers understood the main themes and (apart from one minor criticism I had that I don’t want to post as a spoiler) did the original a great service and still managed to put in some subplots that I thought would be cut.
Completely entertaining and never felt like a three hour movie
It also has a great soundtrack that kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time it was subbed.
